Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be an experienced birder to volunteer?
Not at all. Plenty of our volunteer roles — event setup, community science, habitat work, behind-the-scenes support — don’t require any birding experience. If you want to learn along the way, we’ll pair you with someone who can show you the ropes.
Do I have to be a member to volunteer?
Nope. Volunteering is open to everyone. That said, becoming a member is an easy way to stay in the loop and support the chapter, and many of our volunteers do both.
How much time do I need to commit?
As much or as little as you’d like. Some volunteers help with a single event a year; others serve on the board or lead multiple field trips each season. Tell us what works for your schedule and we’ll find a fit.
Can kids and families volunteer together?
Yes, we love it when they do. Community science projects like the Great Backyard Bird Count and habitat planting days are especially family-friendly. Just let us know ahead of time so we can plan accordingly.
